This guide covers the Byteengine Translator app for the BTM-223 earphones — app requirements, Bluetooth connection, and the translation modes.

Translation app requirements

To operate properly, our Byteengine Translator app requires a device running the latest versions of iOS or Android. Since our translation app is always learning and adding new words, all translations are done in real time, which requires you to have an active internet data plan or Wi-Fi connection in order for the app to work.

App functions

The Byteengine Translator app is a powerful app which includes the following functions.

• Voice translation mode — perfect for traveling. Speak into your earphone and the words are translated both verbally and visually on your device screen. The other person can tap the device to speak in their language, and it is automatically translated back to your earphone while also being displayed on screen.
• Group translation mode — lets multiple users chat in a group while each speaks their own language. Set up a group translation conversation, invite people, and start talking — in a meeting, at dinner, at a conference, or from across the world, each in their own language.
• Image translation mode — translates the text inside an image. Use it to easily read menus, road signs, etc. in other languages.
• Background translation mode — lets you enter text by voice in any app. Set the native language and the target language, then input your native language by voice and output the text in the target language.

Connect via Bluetooth

Turn on the earphone by long-pressing the Power button until the LED flashes quickly in blue, then pair it from your phone.

Download the app

1. On your device, find the App Store icon (iOS) or the Google Play Store icon (Android) and tap it.
2. Type "Byteengine Translator" in the search box and tap search.
3. Tap GET / Install and follow the prompts to download the app.

Once downloaded, the Byteengine Translator app should appear as an icon on your device.

Getting started

Ensure that your Peiko translation earphone is switched on and connected to your device, then start the Byteengine Translator app. A box appears on the screen indicating that the earphone is correctly connected to the app and ready for translation.

Voice translation

This feature is especially designed for brief translation in public. When using it for the first time, please allow access to the microphone and speech recognition.

In voice translation, choose the language you are speaking in the white area. For example, if you want Chinese translated into English, choose Chinese in the white area and select English in the grey area.

How to talk

Press the Talk button as shown and speak. Your phone will automatically translate what you said into the target language (in this case, Chinese to English; the translated English is played out through the speaker). The translations are displayed on screen. When you want the other person to speak, press the microphone in the grey area — their translated speech is played out through the earphone.

Group translation

This feature is specially designed for group translation. You can either join one or start a new one.

Start a group translation

Tap Group translation and enter your name. Choose your own language. For example, when you choose Chinese, whatever others speak will be translated into Chinese and played out for you.

In the group chat screen you'll find: 1. the group chat number, 2. settings, 3. the keyboard, and 4. speak and translate. Press the speak and translate button to speak. In the settings, you can choose to play out the translation; the translated speech is played out through the earphone.

Align the camera with what you want to translate.

Background translation

This mode lets you enter text by voice in any app. Tap Background translation in the app to access the settings.

• Position 1 — select your language and the language of the translation by tapping the box above.
• Position 2 — a sound switch that plays the translation through the headphones each time you translate; you can turn it on or off.
• Position 3 — the reverse translation switch, which turns the reverse translation function on or off.

Once you have set the language, shrink the app into the background. Note that you are leaving the app running in the background, not closing it.

iOS 14.5 and above

When the app is running in the background, you'll see a hover box on your desktop. You can swipe right on the hover box to turn it into an icon.

For example, with English to Chinese translation selected, open Messages, tap the Talk button on the earphone, and speak: "I'm going fishing tomorrow, do you want to come with me?" The background translation automatically translates the text and copies it to the clipboard, so you can simply paste to complete the translation. The hover window displays the translated content. If you haven't turned off playback sound, the translation is also played back to you — you can turn this on or off in the background translation function.

iOS below 14.5

A notification appears on your screen to alert you when the app is running in the background; a hover window does not appear. The result of the translation appears as a notification, and the translated text is copied to the clipboard so you can paste it to complete the translation.

Reverse translation

Use this function to translate without closing the current app. Open the background translator and let it run in the background. Open the app you're using, and when you want to translate something, select and long-press the content and wait a moment for the copy button to appear, then tap it. The background translation translates the content you copied and presents it in the hover window.

Offline translation

You can choose to download a language so that, in airplane mode or without a signal, the app can still translate with the downloaded language. Here you can select the language files you want to download: for some languages we support text translation, and for others, audio translation. You need to download the text file and the voice file separately — only when both files are downloaded can you use it for offline voice translation.

Regulatory compliance

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
• Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
• Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
